McLaughlin Carriage becomes General Motors of Canada

With the steady decline of carriage purchases and rapidly increasing sales of automobiles, the McLaughlin family agreed to sell the McLaughlin Carriage and Motor companies to American-owned General Motors on November 1, 1918, thereby establishing General Motors of Canada. However, Sam and George McLaughlin stayed on to run the business as president and vice-president, respectively, and ensured that the cars continued to be manufactured in Oshawa.
