In the settling of the Canadian West, many communities found themselves with a number of Protestant denominations but had difficulty recruiting ministers. Some groups formed the General Council of Union Churches in 1912 to deal with the practicalities of church administration and to encourage churches to unite. After the First World War, the discussion continued, and resulted in the United Church of Canada. This church was the union of the Methodist Church of Canada, the Congregational Union of Canada and about 70 percent of the Presbyterian churches in Canada. The United Church is the largest Protestant denomination in Canada.
