Rights and permissions

The Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum are pleased to encourage the responsible use of their collections.

If you wish to reproduce or transmit any image, text, or part of the collections for any purpose other than private use or research, you must first obtain a written permission from the Canadian Museum of History or the Canadian War Museum.

Reproduction and permission fees

When licensing materials from the Canadian Museum of History or the Canadian War Museum, reproduction and permission fees may apply and will vary according to availability of digital files and the intended usage of such material. Upon reception of your request, the permission team will contact you directly to provide you with a quote based on these criteria. You will have the chance to confirm the fees before we proceed with your request.

General conditions

  • Please submit your request using the online request form or follow the steps below to submit a written request
  • A period of four to ten weeks may be necessary to process your request
  • Please note that reproduction fees and usage fees are applicable and will vary according to the planned usage.
  • If the copyright on the work is not completely held by the Museum, the user must obtain written permission from the copyright owner
  • The credit line, as specified by the Museums, is mandatory and unless otherwise advised, permission to use is granted on a non-exclusive and one-time basis only
  • Unless approved in advance by the Museum, material shall be reproduced in its entirety and shall not be retouched, obscured, or altered in any way which could affect its historical or artistic integrity
  • The Museum of History and the War Museum have the right to deny or withhold access to material from their collections
