A step closer to the new Canadian History Hall

August 7, 2014

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

For immediate release

Gatineau, Quebec, August 5, 2014 — The Canada Hall will soon close its doors to make way for the new Canadian History Hall, the largest, most comprehensive and engaging exhibition on Canadian history ever produced.

The Canadian History Hall, at over 4,000 square metres, is the most ambitious project the Museum has ever undertaken. It will occupy half of the Museum’s permanent exhibition space. The new Hall will convey to all Canadians — and to the world — the story of Canada, from the end of the last Ice Age to the present day. It will open on July 1, 2017.

To allow for the creation of this new exhibition, the Canada Hall will close on September 1, 2014, at 5 p.m. This closure will have no effect on the Museum’s many other offerings, including the Grand Hall, the First Peoples Hall, the Canadian Children’s Museum, The Canadian Stamp Collection and the IMAX® Theatre.

The Museum will present many exciting special exhibitions on Canada’s history, such as Snow (until September 28, 2014) and Canada’s Titanic – The Empress of Ireland (until April 6, 2015) and in the coming months and years, exhibitions on Canadian Confederation and Terry Fox. The Museum will also welcome major international exhibitions that should not be missed. In 2015, the Museum will showcase The Greeks – From Agamemnon to Alexander the Great, the most vast and all-encompassing exhibition on Ancient Greece to tour North America in decades, and We Call Them Vikings, an artifact-rich exhibition, comprised of many objects that have until now rarely been shown outside of Scandinavia.

The Canadian Museum of History looks forward to welcoming visitors to the new Canadian History Hall when it opens in 2017 as Canadians celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation. Regular updates on the development of the Canadian History Hall will be posted on the Museum’s website.
